Crop Tops Aren’t Topping My List
There are two words sending me into a bit of a panic this season (or maybe a rage – a little bit of both, I can’t tell which). Crop. Top.
What’s up with all the crop tops in stores right now? Aritzia. Urban Outfitters. Zara. I can’t get away from these midriff-baring monstrosities. They are literally everywhere I turn.
Yes, I know they’ve been spotted on runways (3.1 Phillip Lim, Charlotte Ronson, Mara Hoffman, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, Ruffian, to name a few), websites (The Man Repeller and Refinery29 had recent posts), and red-carpet walkers (Doutzen Kroes and Miley Cyrus rocked the crop, and Diane Kruger is a repeat offender), but is this really a trend that should make it to the mass market? I mean really, only 2% of the population can pull these off (clearly a scientific fact), and most of those 2% are either girls under the age of 7, or Rihanna.
My problem with crop tops isn’t the actual tops (they’re cute and wee, what’s not to love?), but with the fact that most of us don’t do the requisite amount of cardio and crunches to make them an intelligent wardrobe option. I’m not suggesting that there’s anything wrong with a little extra cushion around the midriff, or that we should be made to feel bad if we don’t have the rock hard abs that crop tops show off best. I’m simply saying that perhaps this is a trend that, like harem pants, ponchos, and onesies, is better left to the fashion professionals.
If you’re intent on proving me wrong, then check out this selection of crop tops from Asos, Free People, and Nasty Gal, and bring it on. The ultimate fate of the crop top is still up for grabs, so if I’m wrong, then c’est la vie. I’ll just grin and “bare” it.
A crop top is rendered infinitely more ladylike when fashioned into a sweet bow, and infinitely more hip when paired with classic denim cutoffs.

I spotted a girl wearing a similar style to a film screening recently and truth be told, she rocked it. She paired the striped crop with loose silk cargo pants, a casual ponytail, and sky high heels. It was crop-tastic.
