Forno Cultura – A Bakery Experience in King West
I’m always pumped when a new food spot opens in my neighbourhood, but when it’s a bakery I usually prepare myself for disappointment, since they often don’t carry anything for the gluten-free set. So imagine my excitement when I ventured into the newly-opened Forno Cultura with some friends, and asked if they had any GF goodies, and the answer was YES!
On this debut visit I tried a Cacao Nocciola cookie (pretty good, but not something I’d rush out to have again) and something called the Torta Caprese – bingo! The split personality loaf pairs a base layer of fresh lemony-cake with a dark chocolate top. Not too sweet, and made with almond flour, so it’s suitable for anyone with gluten sensitivities.
I’m not sure the same can be said for the ricotta treats, the biscotti, or the incredibly tempting pizza al taglio on display, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.
Forno Cultura is tucked under sausage-factory WVRST, on King Street West. The bakery serves a huge assortment of baked treats (both savoury and sweet) and espresso bevvies, six days a week (closed Mondays). The skilled bakers are on full display behind a large glassed wall, so you can watch your biscotti come straight out of the oven, and onto your plate.
