So you’re headed to an urban destination. Bright lights, lots of action, and no room for a sartorial misstep, after all, the stakes are higher when you’re in the big city. A bag full of these basic essentials, plus a few great accessories will keep you looking comfortable and chic morning, noon, and night.

Start with a pair of dark denim skinnies that hit at the ankle. Paired with flats or heels, they’re the perfect starting point for a polished city look. Point Sur Hightower Skinny Jeans ($198)

Never underestimate the power of a crisp button down shirt to dress up your basic denim.

Pack a few flowy tanks and tees in neutrals like black, white, and grey that will look great layered, or on their own. This isn’t the time for kitsch and graphics– keep things clean for a chic look that will blend in with the locals. Madewell Muscle Tee ($42)

Speaking of layering, a sharp black blazer does double duty day or night, and will keep you warm if temperatures cool. Feel too stiff in a blazer? Swap it out for a great moto jacket.
Aritzia Exeter Blazer ($125)

A chic dress that you can dress up or down is another great add. One piece, multiple outfits. That’s a good return on your fashion investment. Aritzia Wilfred Pompe Dress ($145)

The key to transforming basics into complete ensembles is travelling with a selection of great accessories. Jewelry, scarves, and belts are all small, easy to pack, and can take an outfit from blah to beautiful. Stick with classics like layered gold or silver, chunky cuffs, or statement necklaces. Pearl Padmé Pendant ($34)

Shoes are the Achilles heel of packing. They take up a ton of room in your suitcase, so you want to edit, but you need something that will keep you comfortable when you’re pounding the pavement, freeing you to concentrate on the sights and not your sore feet. For me, the answer is a pair of classic canvas kicks (I usually go for Converse). They’re super comfortable and I can walk in them all day long. If you prefer something a little dressier, a classic ballet flat should do the trick. Add in a pair of heels to cover you for evenings (the kind you can wear for 4-6 hours without wanting to cut off your feet) and you’re set. Jack Purcell Kicks ($70)

Stay hands free with a classic cross body bag that will fit everything you need for a day of exploring. Map? Check. Camera? Check. Wallet, keys, lip balm? Check, check, and check. Time to explore. Coach Mini Borough Bag ($378)
