J.Crew Launches New Fragrances
If someone were to capture the essence of J.Crew and bottle it, here’s what I imagine it would smell like – a base of perfectly worn-in denim, combined with a hint of wool, preppy plaid, and some Jack Purcell rubber, all layered under bold top notes of tortoise shell, cashmere, and neon. Now that’s a noseful!
Thankfully, when J.Crew decided to create their first fragrances, they didn’t come to me (shocking, I know), but instead looked to the expert noses at Manhattan-based Arquiste, resulting in two incredible scents you can actually wear.
Arquiste for J.Crew No. 57 and Arquiste for J.Crew No. 31 are inspired by the first all-female modern art show in the U.S., put on by Peggy Guggenheim on January 5, 1943. It’s quite an obscure reference for a perfume, but the combination of bold aesthetics, quirky women, and Americana is certainly in line with J.Crew’s own recipe for success.
As for the fragrances themselves? Scrum-diddly-umptious.
No. 31, named after the show, Exhibition by 31 Women, is the more feminine of the two, inspired by the bold scents worn by the avant-garde crowd of artists and guests in attendance at the famed art opening. Red vermouth, Bulgarian rose, eau-de-vie accord, damson plum, patchouli, and oakmoss combine to create a scent perfect for a woman who loves being the life of the party.
No. 57, a unisex fragrance named after the gallery’s address on 57th Street, is quietly confident, recalling the aromatic cocktails of the evening, combined with the gallery’s woody oak walls. Arquiste has captured that unique combination using deep aged whiskey, cinnamon bark, oakwood, cedarwood, labdanum, and vanilla bean. It sounds almost too delicious to wear, but surprisingly, the result isn’t overly sweet, but a subtle and calming scent, perfect for fall and winter.
The packaging is perfectly J.Crew, in other words, classic and understated. Ditto for the fragrances. Follow your nose to the nearest J.Crew and get a whiff of what’s to come.
Both Arquiste for J.Crew fragrances will be available September 23rd at J.Crew stores across Canada and online.
